One of the biggest storylines this weekend had little to do with Arkansas trying to extend its hot streak in the Southeastern Conference. Instead, the Razorbacks' first trip to the new Carolina Stadium was just as big a story. With the Hogs checking out the Gamecocks' new digs for the first time, a lot was made of Arkansas visiting the one ballpark that could possibly rival Baum Stadium.
So what did the Razorbacks think of their own home park's biggest competition? They came away quite impressed.
"We came out here (Thursday) and looked around," pitcher Dallas Keuchel said. "We talked about how a lot of things looked like Baum and lot of things didn't. But it's a really nice park and it's going to bring a lot of fans in."
Freshman Zack Cox praised Baum as one of the main reasons for his choosing Arkansas over other schools. But even after just one visit to Columbia's new crown jewel, Cox had to admit Baum has a little competition when it comes to top places to play in college baseball.
"This place is really nice," Cox said. "I mean this is top of the line right here. It's really good."
Showin' Some Pop
Scott Lyons nailed his second home run of the season on Friday, a fourth-inning blast to right field that sailed easily into the South Carolina bullpen. The fact Lyons is starting to show off some strength might come as a surprise to some, but the biggest surprise might have been the Gamecocks holding Lyons to just one deep shot in the series opener.
In two other at-bats Friday, Lyons flew out to deep center field, chasing South Carolina outfielder Whit Merrifield to near the wall to make both plays.
"He's experienced and he's a pretty strong guy, too," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. "Go arm wrestle him and you'll see."
Lyons is now hitting .323 with two home runs and 21 runs batted in this season.
Arkansas improved to 4-0 in conference road games this season, its best start ever on the road in SEC play... Mike Bolsinger struck out six batters in just 2 2/3 innings, including the final five hitters he faced... The Razorbacks have now won seven straight games against South Carolina, dating back to the 2005 season... Dallas Keuchel has now walked just five batters in 44 1/3 innings pitched this season... Brett Eibner extended his current hitting streak to four games with a sixth-inning double Friday.
