The old saying that you can't coach speed – well, that's just not right.
In fact, the University of Arkansas coaches are hoping to do so in the form of Springhill (La.) cornerback prospect Charcandrick West (5-9, 190, 4.31).
West completed a sparkling performance at the UA Football Camp Tuesday morning by nabbing the fastest man award and a few hours later – after leaving campus - officially had a Razorback scholarship offer.
"I liked it very much," West said. "It was a nice camp and a nice environment. I am thinking about going to school here. I like it up here. It's nice and all the people are nice."
West blazed to the win in the 11th-12th grade race for skill players with Clarksville 2011 tailback prospect Wesleigh Foster and Monticello safety Brishen Matthews finishing second and third respectively.
"I can catch, run and I like to hit," West said.
Arkansas is the first BCS school to the table with a scholarship offer although LSU, Alabama and Nebraska have all shown interest.
"They (the Razorbacks) are number one," West said. "It (my decision) should be pretty soon. I might fly to Nebraska Wednesday, but I just don't know yet."
Until Tuesday, his offers consisted of Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Northwestern (La.) State and Arkansas State.
He plans to set down in the next day or two with his parents and coaches and could possibly commit to Arkansas.
"That's certainly a possibility, a good one," West said.
West had over 1,700 yards rushing last season and also played defense on a team that had just 24 players.
"They are offering me as a cornerback, not a running back," West said. "I like the facilities. I ain't never seen a weight room like that."
Springhill is a town of just 4,000 people located near the Arkansas border.
"We didn't have but 24 players," West said. "Some of our team had gotten into trouble with grades. We are going to be pretty good this year because all of them are back."
