There are a lot of fans inside the state of Arkansas who feel really good about the Razorbacks landing Tulsa Booker T. Washington standout Eric Bennett.
The 5-10, 170-pound wideout/cornerback prospect with 4.4 speed has said plenty of things that would lead one to think that.
But those University of Arkansas football fans won't know that for sure publicly until February of 2010.
"I want my commitment to be a surprise on signing day," Bennett said. "I want everybody to be shocked."
Bennett, who plays quarterback for the Hornets, wants to take a full look at things before jumping into a decision.
"I like Arkansas a lot," Bennett said. "I'm still wide open, though. I need to look at the depth chart and see where I'm at when I come here."
Bennett was a good friend of UA assistant coach Garrick McGee before he ever became a Division I prospect.
"I like the style of play at Arkansas and they play freshmen," Bennett noted. "…I like the facilities here. I really like the weight rooms."
He and teammate Calvin Barnett – a 6-3, 320-pound defensive lineman – have talked about going to the same school.
Bennett has offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Texas Tech, Oregon State and Kansas State.
As of this moment, only Arkansas and Oklahoma State show up on both offer lists.
"Calvin and I have been together since first grade," Bennett said. "We've been on the same team for a long time and we're probably going to go to college together, too."
Both were at Arkansas' camp last summer and got offers, have been to plenty of Razorback games and came to the school's one-day camp last Sunday.
"The camp was great," Bennett said. "I came out here to see where I stacked up against the competition and it turned out pretty good. There were a lot of good DBs and a lot of good receivers."
He worked out at wide receiver while at camp, as he did an earlier Razorback one in June.
"I like having the ball in my hands," Bennett said. "On defense I like hitting people, too."
