FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett will return to the school for his junior season, sources confirmed Thursday. An official announcement is expected to come at a Friday afternoon press conference.
Mallett, who broke or tied 12 school records in 2009, had submitted paperwork to the NFL Draft Advisory Committee in December. Underclassmen have until Jan. 15 to declare for the April draft.
The transfer from Michigan passed for 3,624 yards and 30 touchdowns last season. He was named Autozone Liberty Bowl MVP after passing for 202 yards and a score in that game, and was voted second-team all-SEC by both the Associated Press and league coaches.
The Razorbacks finished 8-5 with a 20-17 overtime bowl win over East Carolina last Saturday.
Mallett is one of the early favorites for the 2010 Heisman Trophy with an Arkansas offense that will return at least eight other starters. Junior tight end D.J. Williams also submitted paperwork for underclassmen and has not indicated if he plans to return for his senior season.
Arkansas ranked in the nation's top 15 in scoring offense, pass offense and total offense in 2009.
