Fortson Declares for NBA

Arkansas sophomore point guard Courtney Fortson declared for the NBA Draft on Sunday.

FAYETTEVILLE - Arkansas guard Courtney Fortson will declare for the NBA Draft, though he won't hire an agent, according to a release sent out by the University of Arkansas on Sunday.

Fortson, a sophomore, has until May 8 to withdraw his name and return to school.

"Courtney is an extremely gifted basketball player," Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said in the release. "He certainly has the talent to play the game of basketball at the highest levels and we support him in his decision to explore that option. He has not hired an agent, so the possibility remains that he could be with us next season. More than anything we appreciate Courtney and his family communicating to us his intentions and support his actions whichever they may be."

Fortson averaged a team-high 17.9 points per game last season and led the Southeastern Conference with 5.9 assists per game despite being suspended for the first 14 games of the year.

Fortson's departure would open up a spot on next season's roster and free up a scholarship that could be used in the spring signing period, which ends May 19.
