Below are a few excerpts from what he had to say.
On Ryan Mallett's Injury:
"Obviously it makes you nervous. You wish he was out there all the time. Where I'm proud of Ryan is all the work he has done in the classroom and all the attention he played in spring ball; he knew every play that was happening on the field. He came in and studied the video after practice as if he was taking all the reps. He has been throwing the ball in 7-on-7 this summer, so I think everything will catch up and he'll be fine. We still have a lot of time before that first game. Obviously when you miss spring ball you worry about it, but if there is anyone that can miss spring ball and perform and play well, it's Ryan."
Could a second quarterback be used this year?:
"I don't know. I think that's yet to be seen. A year ago at this time we went into it and Ryan and Tyler were competing for the job. So it's to be seen."
On the New Coaches:
"We experimented with some new techniques and fundamentals in the spring. We did do some new schemes. One thing I've always been is very open to letting the staff contribute and I like new ideas and new schemes, but they have to fit. That's what we'll find out when we start practicing.
"The one thing I've learned as a football coach is each team each year takes on a new personality. We'll have to get out there and find out what our new personality will be."
On the Pistol Running Game:
"I like the four running backs we have. I think they all bring something different to the table. I still think they need to compete to see who will be the starter, and they're all motivated to do that. I think the offensive line is bigger and faster and more physical, and there's more competition. That will make us a lot better. I think what the Pistol does is help our entire offense. We used it a lot last year and were more successful throwing the ball out of it. Now if we can be more powerful running the ball it makes us balanced and more difficult to defend."
On Special Teams:
"The thing I'm happy about is there will be competition. This will be the first time since I've been here that there will be competition for kicker, punter and punt return guy. We'll be better there because of the experience we have now."
Any Signing Class Casualties?:
"There are always a couple that won't make it. We have one guy that is still working on it. We're still working on that."
