Friday Grid Update (Newcomers), 8/6

Arkansas went through its third practice of fall camp without any major problems. Quarterback Brandon Mitchell continued to shine in his throwing as the newcomers were the first to practice Friday.

The Arkansas "newcomers" worked for about 85 minutes in shorts and helmets on the practice field Friday afternoon in the third workout of fall camp. There were 40 players, including several returnees from last year. The evening practice was set for 6:30 p.m. with the veterans. That workout was scheduled to be held inside Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The newcomers labored in 90-degree heat, a little warmer than Thursday's opening practice. While they worked outside, the veterans went to the weight room. They'll flip that schedule tonight. Coaches and players are scheduled to be available after the evening practice. There were no interviews following the afternoon workout.

Marquel Wade and Eric Bennett continued to work in the punt return role. The only drop was by Wade. One move trend that continues in that regard, offensive coordinator appears to have added the role as punt return coach. Tim Horton had handled those duties the last two seasons.

Wade dazzled with some nice catches in one-on-one drills, reaching for throws that were high or away from his body. His quickness and speed made him a nice option on those drills.

Jatashun "Big Tex" Beachum also displayed soft, nice hands for the second straight day. Beachum might be on the heavy side to start his UA career, but he can run routes and his ability to catch will serve him well in Bobby Petrino's passing offense. Tight end Garrett Uekman made several nice catches in team drills late in the workout.
