Punter Sam Retzky of Notre Dame Prep works six days a week to improve his kicking technique and physical fitness. He's either in the weight room pumping iron, running or doing his favorite activity- punting. As a junior Retzky averaged 40.6 yards a punt which is almost 3 yards longer than any other player in the Chicago region. However, you won't see Retzky's name on any all-star list. For him it's all about helping the team and less about personal promotion.
"I just care about helping the team win and focus less on the individual stuff like all-state," says Retzky who during the winter sometimes practices his punting in the snow.
During games Retzky feels that it is his personal responsibility to enable his team win the field position battle and he does a pretty good job of it. Retzky averages almost 41-yards a punt and had a long boot of 64 yards during his junior campaign. While distance is nice, what college coaches really see as impressive is Retzky's hang time. The rising senior consistently averages 4.5 seconds a punt in hang time and sometimes reaches five seconds which allows plenty of time for coverage units to get down the field.
Here are some of the schools that are in contact with Retzky:
Army - "I'm really interested in Army. I like how prestigous the university is and being able to serve my country. They don't have a kicking camp so I've been in touch with coach Ross. He says I have good potential and he wants early senior film," says Retzky. Retzky wants to visit Army and get an appointment packet going.
Alabama - Retzky is getting interest from the powerhouse SEC program. He's getting hand written letters and phone calls from the Tide staff but doesn't think they'll take a punter because they already have a very good freshman punter on the roster.
Minnesota - Retzky will visit the Gopher campus this weekend. "I like that it's in the Midwest and it's a big time school. It's in a big city and I like that," said the promising young punter.
Ball State - BSU is looking at Retzky as a possible walk on. Sam will pay them a visit on July 16th
In addition to the aforementioned schools, Retzky is also hearing from Western Michigan, South Dakota State and Indiana State. Coming up soon for Retzky is the
Chicagoland showcase on 23rd.
Retzky is solid in the classroom with a 3.39 GPA and a fully qualifying 23 ACT score. He plans to take the ACT again in order to get his score up to 25.
