Scouting Report: Navy

The Army Black Knights (3-8) travel to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland to face off with the Navy Midshipmen (4-7) in the 112th annual Army-Navy Game. After winning its previous nine encounters against the Cadets, Navy leads the Black Knights 55-49-7 overall in the historic rivalry.

Navy's fourth ranked rushing offense is led by senior quarterback Kriss Proctor who has 817 rushing yards and 12 TD's on the ground. The signal caller has thrown for 774 yards and seven TD's on the year. Fullback Alexander Teich is the Mids' second-leading rusher gaining 790 yards on a 4.7 YPC average and scoring three touchdowns. The fullback has only been tackled for a loss of three total yards this year in 168 total attempts. Speedy slotback Gee Gee Greene is the third-leading rusher with 455 yards and three touchdowns. Greene leads the team in touchdown catches with four and has 10 receptions on the year.

The Mids' started the season 2-0 after defeating Delaware and Western Kentucky handily. Following the quick start, a pair of gut-wrenching losses to South Carolina and Air Force sent Navy on a tail slide. Navy dropped six straight games before being able to gain a pair of victories against Southern Methodist and Troy.

Receiver Brandon Turner leads the team in receptions with 14 catches for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Matt Aiken has 13 catches for 200 yards and 2 TDs, Aiken has also rushed five times for 88 yards this year.

Navy lost any chance of continuing its eight-consecutive bowl streak in their last outing at San Jose State. The Spartans held Navy to 59 yards under their rushing average and picked the Midshipmen secondary apart for 345 passing yards. Navy took a 24-20 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter but the Spartans quickly marched 73 yards in the time it took to start the fourth for a touchdown and led at 27-24 the rest of the game.

On defense the Mids' are led by linebacker Matt Warrick with 94 tackles, 2 for a loss and one interception. Junior inside linebacker Matt Brewer has 61 tackles on the year, 2 for a loss and four forced fumbles. Defensive end Jabaree Tuani leads the team in sacks with 5½, 46 tackles for a loss 12 for a loss.

The close loss to San Jose State was a common story for Navy this year. Of the Mids' seven defeats, five have come by four points or less. Navy lost to South Carolina, Rutgers, East Carolina, and San Jose State by a combined 11 points. Navy had the lead in the fourth quarter in four of those games and went into overtime in the other against Air Force. With a few plays going their way, the Midshipmen could easily be a team at 10-2 this year. A 63-35 loss to Conference USA champion Southern Mississippi and a 56-14 beat down at the hands of Notre Dame would be the only games that Navy did not play close.

Safety Tra'ves Bush is second on the team with 85 tackles, 4 for a loss. Bush has two interceptions, one of which was returned 49 yards for a touchdown against Western Kentucky. Cornerback David Sperry has 68 tackles, two interceptions and 4 tackles for a loss. Senior Kwesi Mitchell has two interception and two passes broken up this year at cornerback.

Army and Navy are 0-2 against common opponents Air Force and Rutgers. Navy had a pair of one-point defeats and was outscored 56-54, a 23-point differential from Army. It will be up to the Black Knights to keep the Mids' strong rushing attack at a minimum and force Proctor to throw more than usual.
