Starters: LT Ben Jebb #58 Sr. , RT Will Wilson #66 Sr.
Backups: Dan Whitaker #64 Jr., Michael Kime #78 Jr.
Player to Watch: Nick Bennett #55 So.
The Black Knights entered spring practice needing to replace both tackles who are graduating. Senior Ben Jebb (6-5, 246) looks like he has secured the starting left tackle spot this spring. Jebb is similar in build and athleticism to last year's starter Brad Kelly. Jebb is a good athlete who was a defensive end and ran track in high school. He has the quickness needed to get to the second level and finish his blocks. Army offensive coordinator Ian Shields commented on Jebb, "Ben Jebb has done a nice job at left tackle. He's one of the more athletic offensive linemen we have. He runs well and tests well physically."
At right tackle Will Wilson left the spring game with the starting job. Wilson (6-2, 285) replaced an injured Michael Kime at center last season before moving to right guard to replace another injured player, senior Joe Bailey. He ended up starting four games. Wilson is versatile and can play anywhere on the offense line. According to Shields, "Will knows everything. He can play center, guard or tackle. He's just a really good football player. He gets it, he knows his assignments and where he's supposed to be. He's a very productive player so he's going to be in the mix there."
Junior Michael Kime missed spring practice due to off season surgery. Michael "Momo" Kime is following in his father, Bill's footsteps who played for Jim Young. Kime started the opener last fall against Northern Illinois but was injured and missed the next five games. He returned and started the game against Temple at tackle. A talented lineman, Kime (6-2, 246) moves well and really fires off the ball. Remember, he beat out both Wilson and Ryan Powis for the starting center job in the opener with a late push last summer. I think he will win the right tackle job if he is healthy during summer camp.
Junior Dan Whitaker (6-3, 258) played on the JV as a freshman and saw time in every game but one last year with the varsity. Dan was a member of Rich Ellerson's initial recruiting class that attended USMAPS. He has improved every year and. moved up the depth chart during spring practice. Whitaker is a hard worker, moves well and does a nice job getting to second level. He has improved technically each year and is ready to play if called on.
Senior Derek Bisgard started the opener at right tackle last year but re-injured his knee and played in only five games the rest of the way. Derek was expected to compete for the right tackle spot again but experienced knee problems this spring. Bisgard's chronic knee problem may end his Black Knight career but if healthy enough to play he'll be in the mix. With Bisgard unlikely to help the player to watch at tackle is sophomore Nick Bennett. Nick Bennett is a physical player with good size. In high school Nick was awarded the Anthony Munoz Foundation lineman of the year award for Kentucky high school linemen his senior year. Bennett, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 270 pounds, is strong with good flexibility, balance and quickness. He demonstrated an excellent upside this spring.Follow @ArmySports
