3-star lineman has Army among favorites

Tommy Doles of Grand Rapid (Mich.) Christian picked up an offer from Army in mid-March and took a subsequent visit to West Point. Although many schools are playing catch up with Doles, who was offered first by in-state Michigan, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound offensive lineman has the Black Knights among his favorites after experiencing the campus first hand.

"I took a trip to West Point during spring break and loved everything about it," said Doles. "The campus was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I enjoyed meeting the coaches. Going into the service was something before I started being recruited to play D-1 football. West point has such a rich history. There's so much to see while you're there. It was very cool. I think I enjoyed seeing all of the buildings around campus the most.

"Coach Waugh offered me about a month ago. He loves my athletic ability, intelligence, and that I'm able to make quick reads on the field. I'm a student in good academic standing. He thinks I'd be a good all-around fit at the Academy.

"I took the [Army] visit with my family. They liked the family values aspect of the program and the beautiful setting. Coach Waugh was the one who showed us around and introduced me to all of the coaches. They like me at offensive tackle. I spoke briefly to Coach Simi. He seemed like a really good guy."

In his second season as a starter, Doles played both offensive tackle and defensive end. He earned All-Area and All-Conference honors at offensive line and was also selected All-State honorable mention. His five early offers are from Air Force, Army, Iowa State, Michigan, and Northwestern.

"I'm open right now," Doles said on his college recruiting. "I probably favor Michigan because they were the first to offer and I visited them the most amount of times. I'd have to say right behind [Michigan] are Northwestern and West Point. Academics are big for me. I want to just find the right fit with coaches who can help to improve my game."
