Scouting Report: Virginia batting

The Army Black Knights baseball team faces a strong Virginia team today in Charlottesville, Va. Look inside for a scouting report of Virginia's batting.

Virginia is a solid batting team with a impressive .314 team batting average that leads the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers have seven batters with .300 plus batting averages. Virginia also leads the league in slugging percentage (.469) and on base percentage (.412). The Cavs are third in the ACC in walks with 293.

Left fielder Mike Papi, a first team All-ACC player, (.400, 54 RBIs, 6 HR) had two hits in the recent win over Florida State in the ACC Tournament. He leads the Cavs in on base percentage (.536).

Short stop Branden Cogswell, a second team all-ACC pick, (.346, 22 RBIs) has missed the past two weeks due to a broken finger. His status for the NCAA regional is not known. He leads the Cavs stolen bases with 12 in 17 attempts.

Right fielder Joe McCarthy (.329, 49 RBIs, 4 HR) leads the team in walks with 46. He garnered a trio of hits in the recent 7-4 win over Florida State. He was selected to the All-ACC second team and ACC Freshman of the Year.

Center fielder Brandon Downes (.318, 57 RBIs) leads the team with nine home runs and RBIs. However, he went 0-for-6 at the plate in his most recent outing against the Seminoles. Downes also leads the team in slugging percentage (.575).

Designated hitter Derek Fisher (.315, 44 RBIs, 7 HR) had a hit and two walks in the win over FSU. Fisher piled up four hits in the Cavs 8-5 loss to North Carolina on May 17. Fisher's seven homers is tied for second best on the team.

Second baseman Reed Gragnani (.311, 48 RBIs, 3 HR) picked up two hits and a walk against the Seminoles. Gragnani was selected to the first team All-ACC team.

First baseman Jared King (.294, 37 RBIs) had a pair of hits against the Seminoles. King had a pair of hits in the Cavaliers ACC tourney opening loss to Virginia Tech.

Center fielder Kenny Towns (.280, 39 RBIs, 7 HR) hit a three-run walk-off home run in the 12th inning to lift Virginia over FSU. Towns had four total RBIs in that game. Towns and Fisher are tied for second on the team in home runs (7).

Catcher Nate Irving (.279, 28 RBIs) had a pair of hits in the win over the Seminoles. Irving had three hits in Virginia 10-4 win over top ranked North Carolina on May 16.

Black Knight's pitcher Chris Rowley will have his hands full against a strong Virginia hitting squad. Rowley just needs to take each pitch one at and time and not panic if he gives up an early hit or two. It's a long shot but this Virginia team is beatable. Top Stories
