A new rule allowing additional practices in the summer could put both Army and Navy's women's basketball teams at a disadvantage.
College women's basketball coaches no longer have to wait until the fall to work out with their players. A new NCAA rule allows coaches to work out on the court with their players as long as they are enrolled in summer school. This new rule could put both Army and Navy's women's programs at a disadvantage according to an article in the Washington Post.
Players from both Army and Navy are often tied up in summer training which aren't considered formal classes so the players couldn't practice as other teams will be able.
Army head coach Dave Maggarity spoke with the Post on the new rule.
It blows me away," Army coach Dave Maggarity said. "For so long everything was cost containment and it was a level playing field. Now it's all bets are off, the wild west again do anything you want to do."
"Our kids have to spend a month at Camp Buckner, it's a tradition," Army coach Dave Maggarity said. "They are at it there 24-7 and have zero free time. At Navy, kids have to go on a boat or ship. It's pretty cut and dry. Even if they had free time we couldn't work with them."
The new rule is just another example of the sometimes questionable ideas by the leadership of the NCAA. In another head scratcher the NCAA also recently made it possible for teams like UConn to play on their home courts for the Regional Finals.
