Justin Byers: Monken will win

Outside linebacker Justin Byers of Panther Creek High School (Cary, N.C.) signed with the U.S. Military Academy on Wednesday. Look inside for a photo and quotes from Byers.

"Everything went pretty well," said Justin Byers. "We signed at the school's media center. A lot of parents and kids attended and all that good stuff. We had six student-athletes sign, four for football.

"I've been wanting to go to Army for as long as I can remember. I think it started when I was in the sixth grade. Actual interest [from Army] didn't start until last spring when I first heard from Coach (Tony) Coaxum. Going to Army has always been a dream of mine.

"I've watched interviews with Coach Monken and I can see he has a passion to win. I believe he's the right man to get the program turned around to have winning seasons and beat Navy. I'm excited because Coach Lamont Seward is going to be coming by my school for a visit soon.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going directly into the academy. I'd like to go to prep but I think my grades are too high. When I get there during the summer, I plan on getting used to being there, getting to know my teammates, and hopefully earn some early playing time."

Byers, 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, was a two-year starter at Panther Creek playing both outside and inside linebacker positions. He said the former staff was recruiting him at outside linebacker.
