Army women advance to Patriot title game

Army's women beat American University 68-55 on Monday night to advance to the championship game of the Patriot League. If the Black Knights can win they'll earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

Jen Hazlett scored 19 points and Kelsey Minato added 14 points as Army downed American at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y.

Army trailed briefly by one point early in the game but built a 19-8 lead by the 11:46 mark in the first half. The Black Knight women led 30-24 at the half.

In the second half the Eagles narrowed the Army lead to 44-41 on a 3-pointer by Sarah Kiely with 8:18 left in the game. Later, the Army lead narrowed to just two points (50-48) with 5:16 to go. However, Army went on an 8-1 mini run that put the Black Knights back in control 58-49 with 2:58 remaining in the ball game.

Army was able to seal the win by making free throws down the stretch. The Black Knight women finished the game making 18-of-26 from the line.

Army improves to 24-7 with the win while American falls to 22-10. Army is now 15-22 all-time in the Patriot League Tournament.

Army will host Holy Cross, which defeated Navy, for the Patriot League women's basketball championship on Saturday at Christl Arena. Top Stories
