Wright discusses commit to Army

Raymond Wright of Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, N.C., gave his verbal commitment on Wednesday, August 20th to Army. The 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive lineman has not yet been to campus but says he's discovered the post-graduate opportunities West Point presents was a huge selling point, as was Black Knights football. Wright spoke about his commitment with ArmySports.com.

Raymond Wright Bio

"At 12:30 (P.M.) I called Coach Bateman and let him know that I wanted to commit," Wright said. "I could tell that it made him happy to get the news. After I received my offer around late April, I learned about the great opportunities I'd have coming out of the academy. I thought a lot about the discipline and leadership I can gain by being in the military. It will be a new experience for me. The military isn't something that I've always wanted to do or anything like that. I don't see how it could have any negatives though. When I looked at it all I saw were positives.

"When I was offered, they said that my size and speed really stood out to them. They said I had excellent speed for my size and a fantastic get off the ball. I was offered at the 4-technique. I think it's a strong staff Coach Monken has there. I love all of them. Everyone I've talked to speaks highly of them. They have excellent credentials. They're the kind of staff to get the program moving forward.

"It's a big stress reliever to have made my commitment. I feel relaxed right now and can focus on having a winning senior season at Kell with my teammates. I'd like to make it to one of Army's September games if it works with my football schedule."

This is a big pickup for Army especially with the loss of defensive lineman Nick Czar this past week. The Black Knights staff has also offered Wright's teammate Twazanga Mugala, also a defensive lineman.

Wright plays nose guard for the Ardrey Kell Knights. Last season, his first as a varsity starter, he had 50 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a blocked field goal in the 4A Southern Meck 8 Conference. He'll begin his season Friday night with a tough challenge from visiting Weddington out of Matthews, N.C. Wright had two additional offers from Charlotte and Elon.
