The 5-foot-10, 170-pound defensive back committed to Black Knight defensive coordinator Jay Bateman on July 28th, 2014.
"Ever since I talked to Coach Monken in his office (last summer) I've known I wanted to go to West Point. It's a great opportunity with football and an education that will set you up for life. I'm from a family with a very military background. My grandfather was a Lieutenant Colonel and served for more than 30 years in the Army. I also have uncles who served. I feel like I'm ready to serve myself and that I'm up for the challenge as well."
Army was Hanson's only D-1 offer at the time of his commitment.
"Coach Monken said they really liked the way I play in press or man coverage, that was something they would like to do more of in coming seasons with the right personnel. He also said they liked my character."
Richard Hanson was a first team All-Conference selection as a junior and second team All-Conference as a senior in Virginia Class 5A in the Greater Richmond area. He is the son of Richard and Senta Hanson and brother to two younger sisters, Ciara and Shelby. He will likely be going to West Point direct in July.
