While Army might be coming off of a 2-10 season it seems that playing against the Black Knights is still a big occasion for other FBS teams. Such is the case with the UTEP Miners who Army will play on September 17 this season.
El Paso has been abuzz with anticipation of this game ever since the formal announcement confirming the series was made back in September 2014. After UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull had signed off on the series the school has been trying to figure out a way to correlate fan interest to an appropriate game in the Sun Bowl. This has led the athletic department to class this as an “Event Feel” game where the UTEP message of “One City. One Team” will be at the forefront of marketing and promotional campaigns.
The main reason for the level of interest in the game is because Fort Bliss is a huge part of the community in El Paso. According to Stull, "This is so much more than a football game. It is a celebration of our nation's military and their presence in the Sun City."
The slogan unveiling was just the first stage or a multi-layered media blitz that will take place this summer. With this being the first ever meeting between the two teams the UTEP administration feels obligated to get their promotion of the game right and help set an atmosphere that will lead to both sets of players feeling welcome at the Sun Bowl.
"We are in the planning stages right now and can't wait to announce all of the great elements surrounding the game in the coming months,” Senior Associate Athletic Director Chris Park said. "We have formed an outstanding committee with representatives from the city and county of El Paso, UTEP and Fort Bliss. These individuals are all dedicated to putting on a show that El Pasoans will never forget."
As C-USA is still working on its TV deal there has been no announcement of a kickoff time just yet. This though will certainly be an early season game to watch out for to see just how UTEP presents its matchup with Army.
