Buffalo Bulls: Army West Point Black Knights First Look

Moving to 4-0 for the first time since 1996 will not be easy, but if the Black Knights can get the option rolling in the same way that allowed them to score 66 points at UTEP then they have a good shot. The Army Black Knights (3-0) are halfway to bowl eligibility and can continue to move in that direction by picking up another win on the road against the Buffalo Bulls (0-2). Moving to 4-0 for the first time since 1996 will not be easy, but if the Black Knights can get the option rolling in the same way that allowed them to score 66 points at UTEP then they have a good shot. Season so far

Buffalo had one of the earliest bye weeks in the season as they sat out week two, so we have only a couple of games to work with when looking at the Buffalo season so far. The Bulls opened up on Friday night as part of the opening weekend extravaganza and fell flat on their faces in a 22-16 loss to Albany of the FCS. Buffalo have only themselves to blame for the loss as they outgain the Great Danes by 165 yards but lost the turnover battle 4-0 by throwing three interceptions and losing a fumble.

Turnovers were not a problem last weekend against Nevada neither team was able to take the ball from the other. The Bulls rushing defense though was battered for 352 yards, something that is sure to make Jeff Monken smile as he plans the Army assault on that same defensive unit.

Injuries and Suspensions

The Buffalo injury report is either well hidden or completely blank as the Bulls seem to have no issues with players out for that reason when setting the depth chart for the Army game. The one player Buffalo will be missing is cornerback Boise Ross and he will only be sitting for the first half of the contest. Ross is suspended after being ejected for targeting early in the fourth quarter of the Nevada game. It was actually a strange call as the targeting was called on an out-breaking route toward the sideline when Ross made contact from behind as the Nevada player tried to catch the ball. Ross is one of the better defenders Buffalo has, so taking advantage of him being out of the game will be important.

Challenges

During the first two games this fall Buffalo used a two-quarterback system that (as evidenced by their 0-2 record) was pretty ineffective. This week it was announced that the Bulls are going to sink or swim with redshirt freshman Tyree Jackson under center. Jackson went from being the quarterback of the future to the quarterback of the now and with his 6-foot-7 it is easy to see why the Bulls coaching staff wants to throw him out there and see what he can do. He brings an energy to the team that is not there when he is off the field, and that energy is something the Black Knights need to suck out of the game quickly.
