Army downs Wake Forest 21-13

The Army Black Knights came one step closer to a winning season and bowl bid on Saturday with a 21-13 win over Wake Forest. Army (5-3) outscored the Demon Deacons 14-3 in the fourth quarter to earn its first victory over a power conference team in 2016.

Army drew first blood with a 43-yard Ahmad Bradshaw scoring pass to Edgar Poe in the first quarter.   In the second quarter Wake Forest answered with a 3-pass touchdown pass from John Wolford to Tabari Hines and the game was tied at 7-7 at the half.  In the third quarter the Deacs took the lead with a Mike Weaver 37-yard field goal.  

The fourth quarter was nearly all Army.  The Black Knights took the lead for good with a Bradshaw 11-yard run with 11:45 remaining in the game.   After an interception by Army's Jaylon McClinton, the Black Knights marched 60 yards in 12 plays.  Darnell Woolfolk's 6-yard scoring run gave Army a commanding 21-10 lead with 2:54 to play.   Wake got another field goal from Weaver but Army recovered Wake's onside kick to seal the victory.

Army head coach Jeff Monken said after the game that things didn't look good in the third quarter but he knew his team would not quit.

"I didn't expect that we were going to fold, said Monken. "I thought we would fight, and that's what I'm most proud of. They just came out in the second half and fought really, really hard."

The win was Army's first road victory over a power conference team since 2010 (Duke).  Additionally, the victory was the first win over the Demon Deacons since 1989.
