Herbert on Sports Update

COACHING CHANGE: On Monday, the Superintendent terminated Coach Todd Berry's contract. The search for a new head coach should be completed by mid-December. During his 3+ years as head coach, Berry won 5 and lost 35. In 17 of Army's defeats, the opponents scored over 40 points; in 6 losses, we gave up at least 50 points.

MEN'S RUGBY (5-0): This looks to be a stronger club than last year's team that made the final four. Opened the season by defeating UMass 78-3. Then defeated Brown 73-0, Norwich 39-3, U. of Connecticut 102-0, and Harvard 44-6. At Dartmouth this Saturday.

The Army-Navy Rugby match will be held in Philadelphia on 22 November. More on that game later.

WAR! (3-1): Women's Army Rugby is now beginning its second year of play. Our women opened the season by defeating New Paltz 22-0, beat Stonybrook 36-0, lost to Vassar 15-0 (probably the best women's team in the East), and stopped Sacred Heart 34-14.

FOOTBALL (0-6): Louisville 34, Army 10. Down 17-10 just before halftime, Army drove to the Louisville 4 yard line, but couldn't score. Our 2nd quarter TD came on a 33 yard interception return by senior linebacker Brian Hill. The offense hasn't scored a touchdown in 3 games. Stats: Army rushed for 97 yards, Louisville for 208. Army completed 28 of 55 passes for 242 yards, Louisville completed 20 of 32 for 411 yards. Zac Dahman completed 17 of 30 for Army; his replacement, Junior Matt Silva, was 12 of 25 with 3 interceptions. The interceptions, all in Louisville territory, killed our second half offense.

East Carolina at home Saturday - Homecoming. Their record is also 0-6, but they are a 6 ½ point favorite.

SPRINT FOOTBALL (2-1): Rolled over Princeton 44-7. Running game was outstanding, but we're having trouble passing: zero completions in 8 attempts against Princeton.

MEN'S SOCCER (3-6-4): Tied Lafayette 1-1, but lost at Hartwick 1-0. Hartwick, nationally ranked, is 9-2.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (8-7): Lost at Bucknell 4-1 and then lost at Cornell 4-0. We've lost 5 straight games, and scored only 1 goal in the process. Colgate at home this Friday.

HOCKEY (2-0): Opened the season at home by defeating Ryerson Tech of Canada 3-1 and 9-2. Juniors Chris Garceau (goal and assist in first game) and Chad Fifield (2 goals and 3 assists in 2nd game) paced Army. American International here Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL (11-10): Lost to Lehigh 3 games to 1 and to Long Island U. 3-0, but defeated Lafayette 3-1. Holy Cross here Saturday.
