Herbert on Sports Update

MEN'S RUGBY (7-0): Faced Northeastern, the only other unbeaten team in our division, and Army won 55-3. We play Fordham here Saturday.

WAR! (WOMEN'S ARMY RUGBY) (7-1): In only their second year of play, our women won the Met New York league championship by routing Rutgers 38-0 and then in the championship game, defeated Vassar 24-10. Vassar was the only team to beat Army during the regular season. A lot of good (and improving) underclass women on this Army team. Saturday, we play Williams College at West Point in the Northeast quarterfinals.

MEN'S SOCCER (3-8-4): Lost to Navy 1-0 at Annapolis. We have yet to win a Patriot League match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (9-8): Broke the long losing streak by defeating Lafayette 2-0. Plebe goalkeeper Rebecca Garcia played a superb game in her first start for Army.

HOCKEY (4-1): Army scored twice in the final two minutes at Bentley Friday evening to win 3-1. However, reality set in on Saturday, as we were bombed by RPI 6-0. RPI outshot Army 38-12!

VOLLEYBALL (14-11): Defeated Siena College 3-0 and league opponent Colgate 3-1 before losing to Bucknell 3-1. At Navy tomorrow and American U. Saturday.

SWIMMING (1-0) (1-0): Men and women both opened the season with wins, the men defeating Stony Brook 144-84 and our women winning 154-89. Both the men and women took first place in 9 of 13 events.

CLUBS: Men's volleyball finished 5th of 16 teams in the recent Illinois "Big Ten" tournament, highlighted by a win over nationally ranked Purdue. The Judo Club, fielding two teams of five men and one woman each, defeated Navy at Annapolis.

FOOTBALL (0-8): Lost to Cincinnati 33-29. With nine minutes to play, Army led 29-26, but couldn't hold on. We still can't run the ball: 6 yards on 26 carries. Yearling Zac Dahman was 11 for 27 passing for Army. He threw 3 touchdown passes, but was intercepted 3 times. Overall Cincinnati outgained Army 345-138. At Alabama-Birmingham this Saturday. They are a 21-point favorite, having held 5th ranked Georgia to a 16-13 win last week.
