Hebert On Sports Update

A mid month update on West Point athletics.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (9-5): Lost to Holy Cross in the league opener 56-48, but traveled to Lafayette to defeat the Leopards 59-56. Katie Macfarlane led all scorers with 17, all in the second half.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (3-11): We've now lost nine in a row. Beaten by Holy Cross at home in the league opener 60-32. At Lafayette, the offense still can't get untracked, and we were beaten 76-40. Senior Josh Wilson scored 19 for Army.

WRESTLING (1-4): Traveled to Oregon and lost 3 matches. We were beaten by Oregon State 24-13, lost to 23rd ranked Cal-Bakersfield 28-9, and were edged out by U. of Oregon 23-21. Junior Phil Simpson, wrestling at 157 lbs., won 2 of his 3 bouts, one by a pin. He is ranked 7th nationally. Yearling Patrick Simpson (141) also won twice, by a pin and a major decision.

GYMNASTICS (1-1): Opened the season at home by defeating Springfield 206.55 - 195.15. Then lost to Penn State, ranked 5th nationally, 215.6 - 206.55. Junior Brian Lee scored a career best of 9.75 on the still rings to tie for first place and plebe Brandon Whitten, in his first collegiate meet, won the vault with a score of 9.15. Lee's 8.9 on the P-bars was also a career high, and earned him 3rd place.

HOCKEY (7-7-3): Defeated American International 5-2 here, then tied them on their ice 2-2. Air Force is here tomorrow and Saturday. The Friday game will be at 8 pm and will be on national TV College Sports Television (CSTV).
