Herbert on Sports Update for May 14th

This has been our best spring season in several years!

BASEBALL (37-13): In the first round Patriot League Championship game, No. 2 seed Lafayette outlasted No. 3 seed Lehigh 7-6. Later the same afternoon, Army defeated Lafayette 3-1 behind plebe Nick Hill. Hill gave up 8 singles in winning his 10th game of the season, an Academy record.

On Sunday, continuing the best 2 out of 3 championship series, Army banged out 23 hits and routed Lafayette 16-2. Army advances to the NCAA Regionals to be played on June 4-6. There will be 4 teams at each of 16 regional locations. The sixteen winners advance.

LACROSSE (10-4): Completed the regular season by defeating Duke 13-7. Army led by only 4-3 with 11 minutes to go in the 3rd period, but scored the next 7 goals to blow Duke away. As a result, Army is now ranked 14th, and we received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Army will play at No. 3 ranked Maryland this Saturday evening at 7:30.

GOLF: As Patriot League champs, Army will play in the NCAA East Regionals at New Haven, CT on 20-22 May. Twenty-seven teams will compete in the tournament. To advance to the Division 1 championships, Army needs to have the top two individual finishers or place in the top 10 as a team. Junior Scott Manley was named to the NCAA Academic All-America team.

WOMEN'S ARMY RUGBY (6-1): Defeated Columbia 12-0.

WOMEN'S TEAM HANDBALL: Placed third in the Club Nationals Competition, our highest finish ever for this relatively new club. We entered two teams, and our Black team won 4, lost 2.
