East Carolina defeats Army, 38-28

Greenville, N.C.-- James Pinkney pass for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the East Carolina Pirates to a 38-28 win over the Army Black Knights. The loss ended Army's story book 2-game winning streak.

The Cadets got off to a good start in the first quarter when running back Carlton Jones scored on a 14-yard run. The Black Knight drive took just 1:08 and 3 plays to cover 86 yards.

East Carolina responded with a 10 play, 42 yard drive which culminated when Bobby Good caught a 13-yard scoring pass from James Pinkney. Army and East Carolina were knotted at 7-7 at halftime.

East Carolina started an Army-Pirate combined 52 point second half offensive explosion when Cam Broadwell connected on a 40 yard field goal attempt to put the Pirates on top 10-7.

Army took the lead for the second time in the game when Carlton Jones scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 4-yards. Jones would go on to rush for 87 yards on 21 attempts.

The Pirates then took the lead for good when Chris Johnson scored on a 5-yard run near the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter began with East Carolina leading Army 17-14.

A costly Carlton Jones fumble deep in Army territory gave the Pirates excellent field position to start the last quarter. East Carolina needed just 3 plays and 56 seconds to get into the end zone. Bobby Good caught his second scoring pass of the day from Pinkney and the Black Knights trailed 24-14.

Army's D.J. Blackledge ran the ensuing Pirate kickoff back in electrifying fashion. Blackledge sprinted 60 yards for a touchdown to pull the Cadets back to within 3 East Carolina at 24 to 21.

East Carolina responded quickly with a 2 play, 65-yard drive. Art Brown scored from 38 yards to put the Pirates back up by 10, 31-21. Brown would go on to rush for 47 yards on 8 carries. Army trailed 31-21 with 13 minutes remaining in the game.

Bobby Good caught his third scoring pass of the day when Pinkey connected with him from 46-yards. Bobby Good caught 8 passes for 86 yards on the day. The drive took just 4:00 minutes and four plays to cover 64 yards. The Pirates led 38-21 with 9:25 remaining.

Army's Zac Dahman completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Murphy to pull the Cadets back to within 10. However, an onsides kick was recovered by East Carolina and the Pirates proceeded to run the clock out.

Army falls to 2-5 (2-4 C-USA) with the loss. The Cadets hosts Air Force next. East Carolina improves to 2-5 (2-3 C-USA) with the win. The Pirates travel to Houston next.
