Herbert on Sports Update

SPRINT FOOTBALL (1-1): Army 77, Princeton 0. Coach Gene McIntyre said he was embarrassed. He stopped passing early, and Army still led 56-0 at the half. In the second half Army played as conservatively as possible, but the defense scored 3 more touchdowns! Sunday, we play Navy in the Pride Bowl in Newark, NJ.

MEN'S SOCCER (1-8): Traveled across the country and lost to Stanford 2-0. Both their goals came in the final 6 minutes. Then we played 4th ranked California and lost 5-0. Bucknell here Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-4): After a 5-1 start, we've now lost 3 in a row. Hartford beat Army 1-0 in a mid-week game. Holy Cross and Brown here this weekend.

RUGBY CLUB (2-1): Dedicated Dartmouth's new rugby facility by winning a hard-fought game 30-25.

WOMEN'S RUGBY CLUB (3-1): Routed Sacred Heart 86-7.

FOOTBALL (0-3): Iowa State 28, Army 21. Both defense and offense are improving with each game. Army led 14-7 at the half and 21-14 at the end of three. The turning point of the game occurred 4 minutes into the final quarter. Iowa State intercepted a Dahman pass at the Army 27. With 4th and 2 at the Army 19, our defense stopped Iowa State for a 10 yard loss. But an incidental face mask penalty gave the cyclones a 1st down on our 14 – and they scored 2 plays later. The stats were one-sided. We had 23 first downs to 14; we rushed for 132 yards to Iowa's 71; Dahman completed 19 of 34 passes for 233 yards to Iowa's 158. Both teams had 3 interceptions. Dahman was sacked 3 times; the Iowa QB was sacked 4 times. Carlton Jones rushed for 122 yards for Army.

Unfortunately we lost two players. Senior wide receiver Jacob Murphy broke a collar bone, and yearling linebacker Charlie Rockwood tore an ACL.

Connecticut here Saturday; game time is Noon. They are 2-1 on the season, and a 10½ point favorite.
