Tennessee QB/FS hearing from Army and Navy

Hard hitting Preston Smith digs in his cleats and flies to the ball. "I just want the ball in my hands," says Smith, a standout quarterback/free safety for Elizabethton High School (TN). During the 2005 football season Smith had ample opportunity to get the ball in his hands on both offense and defense. Both Army and Navy have taken notice of Smith and are in contact.

"I'm just looking for somewhere comfortable with a challenge in both academics and sports." says the East Tennessee prep standout who was selected to the All-Conference team. So far Smith is hearing from Tennessee, Kentucky, Army, Navy, Marshall, Campbellsville, Tusculum and several Division 1-AA teams.

Smith, who is very interested in both Army and Navy, says it would be exciting to play in the Army-Navy game.

Smith is also attracted to the home state Tennessee Vols. The fleet footed Smith, who sports a 4.59 forty time, visited Tennessee for the Vanderbilt game last season. The Smith family is good friends with Tennessee graduate assistant Shawn Whitten. Smith also visited Kentucky last season.

During his junior season Smith had 70 tackles and 5 interceptions as a safety. He played the last 6 games as a quarterback garnering 690 yards passing and 485 yards rushing.

Smith described his most exciting play of the season as a quarterback: "We were playing Sullivan-South and it was raining real bad and getting towards the end of the game. They were up by 1, I think. I threw an interception to a cornerback and he took off running and I hit him and caused a fumble and we got the ball back."

Smith also excels on the baseball field as a second baseman where he's built a .405 batting average. Despite his exploits in sports he has no problems in the classroom where he sports a 3.2 GPA.
