Army's Bobby Ross welcomes 66

Army football coach Bobby Ross has met just about all of his 2006 recruits in person. He's been to their homes, their high schools. He's welcomed them on visits to West Point. But today will be different. Ross will address the entire group together for the first time at Michie Stadium today. And what a group it is.

"Clearly, this is the best class we've had in terms of potential," Ross says. "I'm very pleased with this class."

Heading the list of incoming freshman is quarterback Carson Williams. Williams, a 6-foot-5 gunslinger, turned down offers from Vanderbilt, North Carolina State and Arkansas to attend Army. Ross is also high on quarterback Chase Prasnicki of Lexington, Va.

Ross said it's unlikely that Prasnicki or Williams challenge projected starter David Pevoto for the No. 1 job during preseason camp. Ross does expect Prasnicki and Williams to fight for spots on the depth chart.

The class of 2010 consists of 32 recent high school graduates and 34 prospects from the United States Military Prep School. This marks Ross's second full recruiting class. He took over in December of 2003.

Ross had to shuffle just to get recruits back then. He did a good job with his first full recruiting class last season and this one is even better. Ross did much of the recruiting himself, traveling from Atlanta (where he won a national championship at Georgia Tech) to San Diego (where he went to the Super Bowl with the Chargers).

His assistants worked hard, too, and all of the effort paid off.

"I think there are as many as 10-15 players from this class that could possibly help us this year, particularly in the secondary at cornerback and possibly in the offensive backfield."

Ross declined to offer names, but said a freshman could serve as a nickel back, a la newcomer Darren Newson last year. It's unlikely Army's cornerbacks - Newson and Sean Grevious - will get pushed by a freshman. Ross added that a freshman could enter the Army running back sweepstakes, which already includes a group of inexperienced players.

Ross and his staff again focused on adding size and strength to the Army program, importing a group that includes 18 players standing 6-3 or better and seven freshman weighing at least 275 pounds. Yes, the class of 2010 seems to have potential.

"Potential is a big word because you never know what they are going to do," Ross said.

Note: Incoming Army freshman football players are still completing basic training. They will continue to work out, leading into preseason practice.
