Poinsettia Bowl: an early preview

The prediction was made right here on this website earlier this year: Army will go 6-6 this season. That would make the Black Knights bowl-eligible for the first time in a decade. Next stop: The Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. Army reached an agreement with Poinsettia Bowl officials earlier this week that guarantees the Black Knights a berth to the postseason bowl game if they are bowl-eligible.

The game is more than three months away, but ArmySports.com figured we would have some fun and predict the game. So here it is: Army vs. Colorado State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 19.

The storyline centers around Army's rebound season and coach Bobby Ross' San Diego roots. He is a favorite son in San Diego, leading the Chargers to the Super Bowl in 1994. Ross offers quotes about how much he loves the city and how great it's to be back.
Time to tee the ball up.

First quarter
Army quarterback David Pevoto comes out firing, moving the Black Knights up the field quickly. Running back Tony Moore breaks a 17-yard run to put Army inside Colorado State's 20-yard line.
First down!
But penalties slow the drive and the Black Knights settle for a 42-yard field goal by Justin Koenig.
Score: Army 3, Colorado State 0
Colorado State comes out firing, too, behind quarterback Caleb Hanie. He hits tight end Kory Sperry, a pro prospect, with a 11-yard touchdown to give the Rams the lead.
Score: Colorado State 7, Army 3
Another field goal for Koenig - from 28 yards out.
Score: Colorado State 7, Army 6

Second quarter
Hanie is firing again, picking apart Army's corners. But Colorado State is hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Two players later, the Rams punt. Kenny Rackers blocks the punt and Michael Herndon returns it all the way to Colorado State's 10-yard line.
Two plays later, running back. Wesley McMahand scores a touchdown.

Army defensive end Cameron Craig bats a Hanie pass that linebacker Barrett Scruggs returns 26 yards for a touchdown.
Army 20, Colorado State 7
Colorado State runs a hurry up offense that produces a 34-yard field goal by Jason Smith as time expires.

Third quarter
Oh, no! Pevoto is hit on Army's second play from scrimmage by Colorado State defensive tackle Blake Smith and leaves the game with a back injury.
Enter Carson Williams, who has moved to second on the depth chart during the season, takes over. He can't move the team.
Hanie hits wide receiver Luke Roberts up top for a 66-yard score.
Army 20, Colorado State 17
Still no Pevoto. Ross goes to the run game to try to eat some time off the clock and move the ball.
First down, McMahand.
First down, Moore.
The drive ends there.
Colorado State starts moving the ball. A 70-yard drive culminates with an 11-yard touchdown run by running back Kyle Bell.
Colorado State 24, Army 20

Fourth quarter
Third-and-six from Army's 24-yard line. The Black Knights go three and out and the game could be over.
Williams takes the snap, rolls out. He's under pressure, but hits Jeremy Trimble 15 yards down field. Trimble takes the ball to Colorado State's 40-yard line.
Williams keeps moving the team, finally down to the Rams' 3-yard line. He scores on an option keeper.
Army 27, Colorado State 24
Pevoto is back and he doesn't look good. But Army's running game keeps the ball moving. After nine straight running plays, Pevoto hits wide receiver Walter Hill on a fade pattern, scoring a 29-yard touchdown with 5:32 left.
Army 34, Colorado State 24

Game over. The Black Knights carry Ross off the field.
