Herbert on Sports Update

It was a rough week for Army sports but Herbert gives us an update on the happenings on the field and on the court.

LACROSSE (6-3):  Another tough loss.  Playing at Colgate, we had a one goal lead with 8 minutes to play, but Colgate scored 3 unanswered goals to win 9-7.  Bucknell here Saturday.

SOFTBALL (7-24):  Opened Patriot League play at defending champion Lehigh.  Army won Saturday's first game 2-1, but Lehigh came from behind to win the nightcap 3-1.  On Sunday, Lehigh swept the doubleheader 5-1 and 6-4.  At Holy Cross for four games this weekend.

BASEBALL (8-13-1):  Army was swept by Lafayette, losing all four games this past weekend.  And every game could have been ours.  Lafayette won by scores of 3-2, 5-2, 5-4, and 5-3.  At Bucknell for two doubleheaders this weekend.

MEN'S TENNIS (9-9):  Defeated Patriot League opponents Lehigh 6-1 and Bucknell    5-2.  Scheduled to play at Rutgers, but they don't have indoor courts.  So with the rain pouring down, they kindly consented to play us at our Lichtenberg Tennis Center.  Bad decision.  Army won 7-0.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (10-10):  Defeated Colgate 7-0 and Long Island U. 5-2.

GYMNASTICS:  Qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing 3rd at the ECAC-EIGL Championships.

TRACK:  Army's men finished 2nd of 6 teams and the women finished 3rd at the VMI Military Track Classic.

TRIATHLON TEAM:  Competed at the Lone Star Triathlon in Galveston, Texas.  The course included a 0.6 mile salt water swim, a 28 mile bike ride, and 6.1 mile run.  Of 500 athletes, Army plebes took 1st and 2nd in the 19 and under age group, and two other cadets finished 1st and 2nd in the 20-24 age group.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CLUB:  Competing in the Northeast College Volleyball League Tournament, Army was runner-up, losing to Northeastern in the championship game.  Overall, we won 5 and lost 2 in the tourney.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (1-1):  Lack of experience hurt (2 games snowed out) as we lost to Rhode Island at home 9-5.
