Army fights but falls 27-6

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles took advantage of 6 Army interceptions to defeat the Black Knights 27-6 in a Conference-USA game played at West Point, N.Y.

The Eagles drew first blood with 10:34 remaining in the first quarter.  Derrick Nix scored on a 1-yard run to put USM up 7-0.

Army struck back with 14:56 remaining in the first half Paul Stelzer booted his first of two field goals of the quarter to bring the score to USM 7 Army 3.  The field goal was kicked from 31-yards out.

Stelzer kicked his second field goal of the quarter from 30-yards out to narrow the score to 7-6 USM with 8:40 left in the first half. 

In the third quarter USM quarterback Mickey D'Angelo tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to Chris Johnson that put the Golden Eagles up 14-6.  D'Angelo would go on to complete 13 of 23 passes for 135 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

The Golden Eagles added to their lead later in the third quarter when Curt Jones booted two field goals, one from 19-yards and one from 33-yards.   With 1:44 remaining in the third quarter USM led Army 20-6.

The Golden Eagles scored the final points of the game after an Army interception when Dustin Almond scored on a 14-yard run to bring the score to Southern Miss 27 Army 6.

Army outgained Southern Miss in total yardage 393-303.   Army made 18 first downs to USM's 16.  Army recovered two USM fumbles.  

Army sophomore quarterback Matt Silva completed 16 of 36 passes for 199 yards and an incredible 6 interceptions.   Silva was replaced late in the game with plebe signal caller Laron Bybee. Bybee drove the Cadets to the USM 16-yard line before the ball was turned over on downs to USM.

Army falls to 0-4 with the loss.  The Cadets travel to East Carolina next Saturday.  Southern Miss improves to 4-1.  The Golden Eagles have a bye week next before traveling to South Florida on October 12th.
