Akron names starting quarterback

Akron coach J.D. Brookhart has named red-shirt sophomore Chris Jacquemain as the Zips' starting quarterback. Jacquemain will lead Akron against Army on Sept. 1 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. He won a tight battle with teammate Carlton Jackson.

Brookhart said Jackson will still get playing time.

"Chris and Carlton have both improved greatly from the spring and are way ahead of where we expected them to be at this point," Brookhart said. "Our decision came down to who we thought would manage the game best."

Brookhart added: "We are planning to still play Carlton in the second quarter of games, but Chris will not be on a short leash. Carlton has earned the right to play and we need him to have as much game experience as possible because you never know what can happen."
