HERBERT ON SPORTS- 9 October

Here's an update on Army athletics over the past week.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (9-1-2):  Navy played us to a 1-1 tie.  Army dominated the game, but Navy was awarded a penalty kick in the second half and made it.  Our plebe goalie, Morgan Bennett, played the entire game for Army.  The wet and slippery field didn't help our offense.  Bucknell here Saturday evening.

MEN'S SOCCER (2-8-2):  Playing better, but offense is a problem.  Lost to Lehigh at home 1-0 in the last minute of play.  Then played a good Syracuse team to a 0-0 tie.  At Lafayette Saturday.

 RUGBY CLUB:  Army's "A" Side defeated Brown 78-3, and the "B" Side defeated Brown's "B" Side 48-0.

GOLF:  Army finished 2nd in the Black Knight classic after leading the first day.  Yearlings Pete Phipps and Scott Manley paced the cadets; Phipps shot a 73-74 147 the second day to finish 5th individually, while Manley's 69-79 148 was good for 8th place.

Earlier, at the Dartmouth Invitational, Army finished 6th.  Scott Manley shot a par 70 the final day, the best round of the Army golfers.  He finished 7th individually.  Plebe Austin Luher also tied for 7th place.

FOOTBALL (0-5):  East Carolina 59, Army 24.  Mistakes did us in, again, but as Coach Berry said, we weren't ready to play.  One minute into the game a fumble gave ECU the ball on our 31, and they scored in 3 plays.  After a 63-yard drive netted a field goal for Army, ECU picked off an Army pass at our 25, and scored in 6 plays.  Later in the first quarter, ECU passed 49 yards for their 3rd TD.  The game was over.

In addition to the fumble, we lost 3 interceptions.  In the 4th quarter, a 21-yard Army punt gave ECU the ball on our 22 – result, touchdown.  ECU intercepted a pass and ran it 41 yards for their final score.

Silva was ineffective at QB, with 4 for 13 and 1 interception.  Plebe Zac Dahman returned and played most of the game, passing 12 for 28, but 2 picks.  Plebe running back Carlton Jones ran for 90 yards, including one 36-yard run.  Senior Josh Holden ran for 36 yards on 6 carries.  Overall, Army rushed for 129 yards to 191 for ECU; we passed for 245 yards to their 137.  We punted poorly – 31 yard average.  Too many penalties:  53 yards against ECU's 20.

Coach Berry has "demoted" five seniors to 2nd or 3rd team for the Homecoming game against TCU Saturday.  We're a 21-point underdog, and they are 4-1 on the season.
