Key Matchups: Army vs. Texas A&M

The fourth game of the year matches the Army Black Knights (0-3, Sagarin 174) and Big 12 Conference Texas A&M Aggies (1-2, Sagarin 65). Texas A&M leads the all time series 2-1, their last match up was an epic ESPN game at the Alamodome, as the Aggies held the Black Knights on a 3rd and goal on the last play…the dreaded delayed hand-off (28-24).

Background

The fourth game of the year matches the Army Black Knights (0-3, Sagarin 174) and Big 12 Conference Texas A&M Aggies (1-2, Sagarin 65).  Texas A&M leads the all time series 2-1, their last match up was an epic ESPN game at the Alamodome, as the Aggies held the Black Knights on a 3rd and goal on the last play…the dreaded delayed hand-off (28-24).  Army heads into this game having lost 9 in a row and nowhere to go but up.  The Aggies have lost consecutive nonconference home games at Kyle Field in the same season for the first time after losing coach Mike Sherman's debut to Arkansas State and last week to the Miami Hurricanes.

Last Week

Army lost to Akron 22-3.  The defense once again played well, holding Akron to three field goals and 357 yards.  Chris Jacquemain was 14 of 25 for 204 yards and the Zips had 153 yards rushing.  The Akron offense looked very sluggish, but was easily productive enough to win.

The Army offense has reached a low point – they can get no worse.  The only question is will it ever improve in the Brock/Walsh era.  5 turnovers: 1 interception, 4 fumbles, 3 quarterbacks all equally inept.

Texas A&M got blown out by the Miami Hurricanes 41-23, allowing 398 yards on 57 plays an average of nearly 7 yards per play.  They did rack up 362 offensive yards, but much of that was after the game had been decided.  They had two turnovers and were simply outclassed by Miami.

What we Learned

Army has a very good chance to go 0-12.  This offense is completely confused, out of synch and show very little ability.  It is very hard to win a game if your offense can't score.

Texas A&M football program is in shambles.  It stands as the best supported mediocre college football program.  Nearly any team has a chance to beat them this year, but of course that assumes that the opponent can score.

This game was originally scheduled for the ESPN2 prime time game and has now been moved to a 12:30 PM EST Kick-Off to be shown on the Versus Network.

Who is favored?

A&M is favored by 28 points

What to look for?

It is very difficult to imagine any scenario where Army will win this game.  The Army offense has been confused while playing lower echelon teams thus far.  You can only imagine that more stress will create more chaos in the Black Knight backfield.  I expect Army to play very conservatively in an effort to not turn the ball over. If you are a big fan of the fullback dive and the punt, then this game will be for you. Now that Coach Brock has added a "Keystone Kops" dimension to this offense, shuffling his ineffective QB's at random and illogical moments, you can count on all kinds of slapstick comedy any time the QB's fake the fullback handoff and try doing anything else against the athletes on the A&M defense.  Consequently, I don't see more than 200 yards in offense, but a very likely reduction in the ridiculous number of turnovers we have seen so far.  A&M took Army lightly a couple years ago and nearly lost, I would expect them to come prepared this time.

Look for A&M to physically and mentally outmatch Army, but they are far too respectful of the Academy to blow them out.  They will throw fewer than 20 passes and exclusively run the ball up the middle in the second half.

Look for calls for Brock's job to begin on Saturday afternoon,

Final Score – Texas A&M 29 - Army 0 (Predictions this year 1-2)

The game will be televised on Versus Network 12:30PM EST.
