Army hopes for repeat of Tulane '07

Certainly, Tulane doesn't think its game against Army Saturday is an easy win. But it certainly says something that Tulane scheduled the Black Knights on Homecoming. Every team wants a win on that big day.

Tulane might very well win, pushing Army to 0-5. But, if history repeats itself, the Black Knights will be in the game. If not win it. Tulane always seems to bring out the best in Army and the Black Knights, who always seem to catch bad breaks, make magic against the Green Wave.

Tulane (2-2) enters this weekend with the memory of last year's Michie Stadium Miracle fresh in its head. Army trailed the Green Wave 17-7 late in the fourth quarter, but rallied for a 20-17 overtime win. Kevin Dunn's 36-yard deflected hail mary pass to Mike Wright as time expired sent the game into overtime.

Dunn replaced Carson Williams after he took a hit to the head in the fourth quarter. Owen Tolson's 25-yard field goal in OT completed the dramatic win. The Black Knights have lost 10 games since.

"I think you just have to remind them that we had the game won," said second-year Tulane coach Bob Toledo. "And we didn't convert a short yardage situation and then we got into overtime after the Hail Mary. We gave them an 80-yard drive and a Hail Mary, and then we went into overtime and they made the field goal and we didn't. So, you remind them that they've got to play until the end regardless of whom you play and that's pretty much what we've said."

Going back almost six years ago, Army pulled off another big win over Tulane. The Black Knights headed into that game in the Louisiana Superdome 0-9 and as heavy underdogs. But Army pulled off a 14-10 upset win, staving off a winless season. The Black Knights would go 0-13 the next season. Reggie Nevels' 2-yard run in the fourth quarter clinched the win.

Let's hope Army's quarterback, whoever it is, can come up with a big play during crunch time this week against the Green Wave.

Extra points: Army's losing streak in games played away from West Point is now at 12 games. The Black Knights' last victory away from Michie came on Sept. 23, 2006 at Baylor ....... Army is one of only three teams in Division I-A football this season. The others are Washington (0-4) and North Texas (0-4). North Texas and Army are scheduled to play six games from 2009-2010 and 2016-2019. Army and North Texas have not played since 1997. These two teams have met twice in their history with Army winning on both occasions. They first played in 1996 at Texas Stadium where Army won, 27-10. North Texas lost at Army the next year, 25-14.
