PASSING OFFENSE
F
If you only attempt five passes in a game, none of those five passes should be an interception. That one first half interception deep in the red zone likely cost Army the ball game.
RUSHING OFFENSE
D
Again, for a triple option offense to be affective, especially if you aren't getting it done in the passing game much, you need 250 more yards rushing. Army finished with just 196. Steelman had some nice runs but there needs to be more success in this aspect of the Black Knight's game. Four fumbles is too much even if none of them were recovered by the opposition.
PASSING DEFENSE
C
Joe Kemp finished 14-of-24 for 166 yards and a touchdown. It wasn't too bad but Army allowed that long 42-yard pass by Kemp that put the ball at the Army 4. While Army did sack him twice it would have been nice to get a pick.
RUSHING DEFENSE
C
Allowing 126 yards rushing for a game is not too terrible but the Cadets gave up way too many long runs. The Green Wave had four players with runs longer than 10 yards including one by Andre Anderson that went for 42.
SPECIAL TEAMS
B-
Alex Carlton did well, making 3-of-4 field goals on the day. However, you've got to make that last second kick for your team. That said, why did he have to kick so many? See above! Jonathan Bulls can do better punting the ball. Most of his punts were for 32 or 33 yards. Damion Hunter had a great return that put Army in a position to win the game. Army's kickoff coverage teams gave up too much yardage (45 yards on one return).
COACHING
C
This probably would have been an 'A' if Carlton had made that kick but unfortunately he didn't. The staff has to figure out a way to make this triple option a little more affective. Too many times the offense was forced to punt or attempt field goals. A good thing is that despite being down late in the game the team still had a chance to win at the end.
OVERALL GRADE
C
Overall there's hope but this is a game that the Army nation had circled as winnable. Anytime you lose one of those it hurts a little more than normal. The Black Knights can't afford to mope about this loss. They need to get busy getting better because a good Vanderbilt team is heading North for West Point on Saturday.
