Holy Cross defeats Army, 70-56

With a winter blizzard pounding the Christl Arena Army's shooting was as cold as the weather. Holy Cross held the Black Knights to one of its worst shooting nights of the year as Army made only 32.2 of its attempts from the field.

Holy Cross, after a miserable start, showed why they were selected as preseason favorites to win the Patriot League. Holy Cross has now put together back-to-back double-digit wins. Army lost for only the second time this year at Christl Arena.

Army actually started well as their defense forced three turnovers and limited Holy Cross to just a three point basket. Despite the lock down defense Army had only a 5-3 lead. Holy Cross went on a 17-6 run to take a 20-11 lead. Two Army free throws around a made Crusader free throw made the score 21-17. Mike Cavataio, a St. John's transfer, hit his next two shots from the field including his second three point basket of the half to extend the Holy Cross lead to 26-19. Army struggled to score except off turnovers. Eric Meister, a 6-8 forward, gave the Black Knights fits down low as he contested Army's drives to the baskets and blocked a season high nine shots. Army made a late 6-0 run to close within five (32-27) at the half. The half ended with Marcus Nelson throwing down a slam-dunk at the buzzer.

Holy Cross put the game out of reach as they opened the second half with a 14-4. During this run Julian Simmons missed a wide open three point shot only to watch Andrew Beinart hit his three point shot as the Crusaders extended the lead to twelve points. Army hit four three point baskets late but Holy Cross hit three of their four free throw attempts to close out the win.

The loss drops the Army Black Knights record to 13-10 and 3-6 in Patriot League while Holy Cross improves to (7-17) 4-5 in Patriot League. Holy Cross had four people in double digits led by Mike Cavataio who had 15. Cleveland Richard led Army with 15 points. Army travels to Sabler Arena Saturday February 13 to face the league leading Lehigh Mountain Hawks.
