Army Baseball Update: 4/27

The Army Black Knight baseball team won 3-of-4 against Lafayette to lock up the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Additionally, Army will have the benefit of playing all its conference tournament games at Doubleday Field at West Point. Army has a series with Bucknell next weekend. There will be four participants in the Patriot Tourney. The other three teams are to be determined.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Hofstra 11, Army 9- On Tuesday at Hempstead, N.Y. Army fell to Hofstra. Army's Chris Rowley allowed 6 hits and 6 runs in the first two innings as the Black Knights dug themselves into a hole. Army was able to tie the score at 8-8 in the top of the seventh but Hofstra responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure an 11-9 victory. Army got two hits and three RBIs from Clint Moore. Moore, unfortunately, would go on to take the loss for the Black Knights by allowing four hits and three runs in the final two innings.

Army 11, Lafayette 2- This was the first of two Saturday games. Army pounded out 16 hits with three Army players picking up 3 hits each. Ben Koenigsfeld and David Darnell each had homers for Army. Meanwhile ace Matt Fouch limited Lafayette to just 6 hits and 2 runs as he went the distance in a 7-inning game.

Lafayette 8, Army 7- In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, this one a 9 inning affair, Steve Cummings allowed 11 hits and 7 (6 earned) runs in 6.1 innings of work. Army built an early 3-0 lead but a 5-run Lafayette third inning put the visitors in command. Army would tie the score in the fifth but Lafayette platted two more runs in the seventh to pull back in front, 7-5. Army then knotted the score again with two more runs in the eighth. In the eighth, the normally reliable Manny Fernandez came in relief but allowed 2 hits and then a game losing sacrifice fly in the ninth to take the loss.

Army 7, Lafayette 4- In Sunday's 7-inning game, Army got back on the winning track by building a 4-run lead by the third inning and then holding on to pick up a 7-4 victory. Army's Joey Henshaw pitched two innings, allowing just 2 hits and 1 unearned run. Manny Fernandez and Ben Koenigsfeld then pitched the final 4.2 innings in relief, allowing just 3 runs. Army got 2 RBIs each from Shaun Wixted and David Darnell.

Army 5, Lafayette 2- Army picked up the Sunday sweep and series win over Lafayette with a 5-2 victory. The victory also locked up Army the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Army's Lee Logan pitched 7 innings, allowing just four hits and two runs. Clint Moore paced Army at the plate, getting two hits including one home run.
