A-10 Teams Split Tuesday NIT Action

The Atlantic 10 had two teams in action tonight -- UMass and Dayton. The squads went 1-1 as the Minutemen defeated Mississippi State in double overtime and the Flyers dropped a road game to Iowa.

With four Atlantic 10 teams in the NCAA Tournament, most fans of the conference won't have their eyes on the hardwood until Thursday.

Fans of Dayton and Massachusetts, however, were tuned into their respective team's games tonight.

With the First Four of the NCAA Tournament at UD Arena, the Flyers went on the road to the B1G Iowa Hawkeyes. After trailing by just three at half, UD couldn't find their stroke and lost 84-75. Their defensive effort was horrendous to say the least, allowing Iowa to shoot 57 percent from the field and 23 assists on 33 field goals.

Hawkeyes star guard Matt Gatens struggled, but freshman Aaron White dropped 25 points.

The Flyers were led by their best player, guard Kevin Dillard. The Southern Illinois transfer poured in 23 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out six assists in the losing effort.

UD hoisted up 30 three-pointers, connecting on just nine of those attempts. Luke Fabrizius missed all six of his attempts from behind the arc.

In the other game, UMass needed double overtime to hold off SEC middling Mississippi State.

Chaz Williams, a dimunitive sophomore guard who will be fun to watch for years to come in the league, went 11-for-20 with 28 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in 47 minutes. After transferring in from Hofstra, Williams garnered first team All Atlantic 10 honors this season.

To score 101 points, though, you've got to have some help. Sean Carter had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Raphiael Putney added 10 points and a monstrous 16 rebounds to lead the Minutemen to a five-point victory.

UMass will now go on the road to face Seton Hall.
