Newton, Fairley Honored By SEC

Birmingham, Ala.--The huge junior years continue for Auburn's Cameron Newton and Nick Fairley as on Monday both were honored by the Southeastern Conference for their play in the Tigers' dramatic 28-27 win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

Playing in his first Iron Bowl, Cameron Newton completed 13-of-20 passes for 216 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed for 39 yards on 22 carries and another score to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors. He helped bring Auburn back from a 24-0 second quarter deficit on the road against an Alabama defense that had given up just 13 opposing offensive TDs all season.

His three passing touchdowns give him 24 on the season, surpassing the single-season record of 21 set last season by Chris Todd. He also broke the school record for rushing touchdowns in a season with his 18th, surpassing the old record held by Bo Jackson (1985) and Carnell Williams (2004).

For the season Newton has carried the ball 228 times for 1,336 yards. He has completed 148-218 passes for 2,254 yards, a completion percentage of 67.9 percent.

Nick Fairley

On the defensive side of the ball Nick Fairley has been just as dominant as he earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. Facing an Alabama offense that has been scoring points in bunches, he came up with one of the biggest plays of the game on a sack and caused fumble on Greg McElroy that he also recovered. He was credited with four tackles (3 solos) with two sacks (-15 yards) in Auburn's 28-27 win.

For the season Fairley has 51 tackles, 20 tackles for loss for a combined 90 yards, and has added nine and a half sacks. His tackles for loss total is tied for the most in school history for a single season going back to 1981.
