Cecil Newton Won't Attend Heisman Ceremony

Cecil Newton explains why he won't be making a trip to New York City this weekend.

Atlanta, Ga.--The family attorney for Cameron Newton and his father Cecil announced on Thursday that the father of the quarterback will not be making the trip to New York City on Saturday where his son is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

George O. Lawson, Jr., issued this statement on the behalf of Cecil Newton:

The events to take place in New York at the Heisman Trophy ceremony this weekend serve as a crowning moment for the athletes and their families alike.

For all of my fifty years of life, coupled with 25 years of marriage, I have made an exhausting attempt to be a good husband, father and generally a good person of integrity. The past 60 days have caused all that my family worked so hard to accomplish without distraction, I have decided not to be in attendance at the Heisman ceremony as it will perhaps rob Cam and the event of a sacred moment.

With Deepest Respect

Cecil Newton

Newton, who was selected the AP and Coaches SEC Offensive Player of the Year, is also a candidate for the Walter Camp Player of the Year, The Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award which will be announced on Thursday night. The quarterback set a single season scoring record for the Tigers this year and set an SEC record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season.
