Fortner's Tigers Earn Road Win at GW

The Auburn women's basketball team won on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., vs. George Washington.

Washington, D.C.--Sophomore Blanche Alverson scored 16 points and senior Alli Smalley added 14 as the Auburn women's basketball team picked up a 52-45 road win at George Washington on Wednesday night.

The Tigers improved to 4-5 while George Washington dropped to 5-5 with its first home loss to go with five wins.

"It was a hard-fought victory, but it was nice to get the ‘W,'" Auburn coach Nell Fortner. "It wasn't always pretty. We had a cold shooting night, but it is nice to pull it out. It was good to have to fight to pull it out, that will help our confidence and show us what we are capable of doing."

Auburn's cold shooting registered a 29.7 on the field goal percentage statistics line, but the home team didn't do much better hitting 33.3 percent.

The Tigers won the game with a commanding 49-36 rebounding edge as senior Jordan Greenleaf led the Tigers with 11.

"I thought our effort on the offensive boards was outstanding, that was one heck of a good effort," Fortner said. "Jordan Greenleaf was all over the boards, Parrisha Simmons, it was just one player after another--they battled strong on the boards. To me, that was the difference in the game because it gave us more opportunities to shoot the ball."

Auburn led 25-15 and built the margin to as many as 16 points with 6:59 to play.

The Tigers will return to action on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. CST game vs. Purdue. The game will be played at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
