Tigers Top Tide In SEC Opener on the Road

Nell Fortner and the Auburn women's basketball team continued its run of success vs. rival Alabama with a win in Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa, Ala.--The Auburn women's basketball team opened SEC play with a 66-55 victory over Alabama on Sunday as senior forward Jordan Greenleaf led the way with a career-high 19 points while adding nine rebounds.

For the Tigers it was their fourth straight victory as they improved their record to 8-6. Alabama fell to 11-3.

Freshman Tyrese Tanner scored 15 points and senior Alli Smalley scored 12 for the Tigers. Sophomore Blanche Alverson tied Greenleaf for the team lead in rebounds with nine and she added six points.

Morgan Toles added nine points and five assists for the Tigers and hit key shots down the stretch as the Tide cut Auburn's lead from 18 points to six.

Tierney Jenkins of Alabama led all scorers with 31 points. No other Tide player scored in double figures.

Coach Nell Fortner, who improved her record vs. Alabama to 11-2, said she liked what she saw from her Tigers. "I am so proud of this team," Fortner said. "They came out and fought hard. It was a great effort."

Fortner said she is enjoying watching Greenleaf shooting the basketball with a lot of confidence and said it was important that Smalley, who had been in a shooting slump, hit 5-8 of her shots, including 2-3 treys.

The Tigers shot 45.8 percent from the field. Auburn hit 3-10 threes and 9-14 free throws. Auburn had 45 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

The Tide hit 28.2 percent of its shots and was 3-20 on threes and 12-16 at the foul line. The Tide had 42 rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Auburn led 28-25 at halftime before taking control of the contest early in the second period. "I thought we came out and ran our offense and we just really tried to attack basket and get the ball to the hole," Fortner said. "We felt like we could really do that with great success."

The Tigers return to action with a Thursday home game vs. Florida.
