Fortner's Tigers Rally for Road Victory

The Auburn women's basketball team continued its solid play in conference action.

Starkville, Miss.--After scoring just 16 points in the first half Coach Nell Fortner's Auburn Tigers rallied to take a 45-41 SEC women's basketball victory over Mississippi State on Thursday night at Humphrey Coliseum.

The Tigers hit just one-third of their shots in the game, but made half of their attempts after intermission to outscore Mississippi State 29-22 in the second half for the comeback victory. Auburn improved to 5-1 in the SEC and 12-7 overall.

With the loss Mississippi State dropped to 0-5 in SEC women's basketball play and 8-9 overall.

Blanche Alverson, the SEC Player of the Week, and Alli Smalley led the Tigers in scoring with 11 points apiece. Catina Bett led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

It was a three-point shot by Smalley with less than a half minute to play that closed out the Bulldogs.

"It just never was pretty," Fortner said. "The one thing I can remember that was the prettiest thing was when Alli Smalley hit her three-pointer there at the end and that was really the difference in the ball game.

The Tigers held MSU to 31.1 percent shooting and scored 19 points off of turnovers.

"I really think defense has been our bread and butter this year," Fortner said. "We have fed off of our defense and we had to do that again tonight. I thought Mississippi State had some opportunities. They missed some shots down the stretch, and I feel like we were defending them pretty well, too."

Next up for Auburn is a 2 p.m. home game on Sunday vs. sixth-ranked Tennessee. The Lady Vols are 6-0 in the league and 16-2 overall.
