"Dream Come True" to Play for AU, Smith Says

LaGrange High School kicker Ellis Smith said he will play his college football for the Auburn Tigers.

LaGrange, Ga.--Ellis Smith, an official visitor to Auburn over the weekend, said he plans to attend AU as a specially invited walk-on kicker for the 2011 football season.

I talked to Coach (Gene) Chizik and he told me he was excited to have me come Auburn and be a part of the family," the LaGrange High School senior said.

"I have committed to Auburn and I am going to walk on and I am going to have a good chance to start on kickoffs," Smith said. "That is what they want me to specialize at. I think I will have a good chance to get a scholarship in December."

As a senior 30 of his 38 kickoffs were touchbacks. "The other ones were sky kicks," he said. He averaged 38 yards on 43 punts and was 5-16 on field goals with a longest of 56. "I was inches short on a 63-yarder just before halftime," he said.

Commenting on his visit, Smith said, "Josh Harris was my player host. He showed me around. He showed me his apartment and took me out We had a good time. We just toured everything and had a lot of good food and met some of the players. We went to the Auburn-Alabama basketball game."

Smith said that he is good friends with University of Kentucky freshman Joe Mansour, who is also from LaGrange High. He was Mansour's backup as a junior.

"I have been an Auburn fan my whole life," Smith said. "I have been coming to games since I was four years old. We have season tickets. It is a dream come true."
