Fortner's Tigers Fall at South Carolina

Columbia, S.C.--The Auburn women's basketball team's late season fade continued on Sunday as the Tigers lost for the fifth time in six games falling 65-49 to South Carolina.

Auburn led much of the first half, but was outscored 17-3 to open the second period and never threatened the home team after that.

Auburn fell to 14-13 for the season and 7-7 overall. South Carolina, which lost to Auburn earlier this year, improved to 16-11 overall and 8-6 in the SEC.

Sophomore guard Morgan Toles led Auburn with 11 points and seven assists. Junior forward Chantel Hilliard also scored 11 for the Tigers.

La'Keisha Sutton scored 24 points for South Carolina as she hit 10-17 field goals.

"We couldn't get to their shooters and they started knocking down three-pointers and got the lead," Auburn coach Nell Fortner said. "South Carolina has some really nice players and they are very physical on defense and we had a lot of trouble dealing with that."

Auburn hit 41.2 percent of its field goals and was 1-7 on threes while the Gamecocks hit 7-16 threes and 43.6 overall.

South Carolina out-rebounded the Tigers 35-29.

Auburn will next play at Georgia on Thursday at 6 p.m. CST in Athens, Ga.
