NFL Draft No. 1: Auburn's Cam Newton

It didn't take long for Cameron Newton's name to be called at the National Football League Draft.

New York--With his selection by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night in the National Football League Draft, quarterback Cam Newton became the fifth Auburn Tiger to be selected first in a pro football draft

Newton was a consensus All-American in 2010 as a junior, his first season at Auburn He won the Heisman Trophy and was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

"Just to get that phone call, man, oh God, it was just like a shock went through my body," Newton said after getting a phone call from the Panthers telling him he was their selection. "I am just blessed to be a part of a great organization. I am ready to get to work."

In helping the Tigers post a 14-0 record while winning the Southeastern Conference and BCS championships, Newton put together a season that is unmatched by any football player in SEC history

He completed 66 1 percent of his passes, hitting 185-280 for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns with just seven interceptions He set an Auburn school record for passing efficiency with a 182 05 rating

He rushed for 20 touchdowns, averaging 5 6 yards per carry and netting 1,473 yards on 264 carries

The first Auburn played selected number one was offensive tackle Ken Rice, who was chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the 1961 AFL draft That was prior to the merger of the AFL and NFL so in 1961 there were competing drafts Rice was the eighth pick of the first round of the 1961 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, but opted to go with the Bills where he became a star player

Running back Tucker Frederickson was drafted with the No 1 pick by the New York Giants in 1965

Another running back, Bo Jackson, was selected number one in 1986 by the Tampa Bay Bucs However, he spurned that NFL team and signed a pro baseball deal with the Kansas City Royals Jackson later played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders

Prior to this year the last number one draft pick from Auburn was Aundray Bruce, a defensive end chosen in the 1988 draft

Newton set an Auburn record for touchdown responsibility in a season with 51--30 passing, 20 rushing and one as a receiver

Newton joined Pat Sullivan (1971) and Bo Jackson (1985) as Auburn's Heisman Trophy winners

He won the Maxwell award as the top player in college football as well as the AP National Player of the Year honor Newton also won the Manning Award presented to college football's top quarterback as he set Auburn single-season records for rushing touchdowns, passing touchdowns, total offense and rushing yards by a quarterback

Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik was at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday night for the draft and had these comments on Newton being drafted by the Panthers in the first round and Fairley going to the Detroit Lions in the first round.

"I think it's great for Cam and Nick, and their families," Chizik said. "You think about all the work that has gone into the last 20-something years of them dreaming of a day like this. Now we get to come and see the fruits of their labor. It's awesome for Auburn. It's awesome for their families. It's awesome for the Auburn family."
