Tigers Soar Past Seahawks in NCAA Tennis

Athens, Ga.--The Auburn men's tennis team opened NCAA Tournament play with a 4-1 victory over UNC-Wilmington Seahawks at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on Friday.

The Tigers will take on sixth-ranked Georgia in the second round of the tournament at 2 p.m. CST on Saturday. The winner of that match moves to the round of 16 in Palo Alto, Calif. Georgia blanked Samford 4-0.

Auburn coach Eric Shore liked the way the Tigers played vs. the Seahawks. "We knew they were a very good team. They had four seniors and a 21-4 record. We knew it was going to be a battle and we are happy to leave with the win today."

For the Tigers it was the fifth consecutive time they have advanced to the second round of NCAA play.

Auburn won the doubles point by taking the No. 1 one and No. 2 doubles matches. AU's No. 1 team of Tim Puetz and Daniel Cochrane, who are ranked 12th nationally, took an 8-5 victory over Chris Cooprider and Kinshuk Sharmah.

Auburn's Andreas Mies and Alex Stamchev defeated UNC-Wilmington's Kosta Blank and Illia Ziamtsou 8-5.

Puetz took care of business at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kinshuk Sharma for his ninth straight victory.

At two singles Auburn's Alex Stamchev defeated Michael Pereira, 6-4, 6-1.

Auburn's No. 3 singles player, Andrea Mies, clinched the match with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chris Cooprider.
