McElroy, Caldwell Earn All-SEC Honors

Auburn junior Casey McElroy and senior Tony Caldwell were named All-SEC on Tuesday.

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn's two most consistent players this season were honored on Tuesday by the Southeastern Conference coaches as shortstop Casey McElroy has been voted First Team All-SEC while catcher Tony Caldwell was voted Second Team All-SEC the conference office announced during the practice day on Tuesday at Regions Park prior to the 2011 SEC Baseball Tournament.

Hitting .370 this season with eight home runs, 18 doubles, and 52 RBI to lead Auburn, McElroy ranks in the Top 10 in eight offensive categories in the SEC this year, batting average (.370-5th), slugging percentage (.555-6th), hits (84-1st), RBI (52-5th), doubles (18-7th), home runs (8-8th), total bases (126-4th) and sacrifice flies (6-3rd).

His numbers have been even more impressive in SEC games alone in 2011 as he hit .398 in the 30 regular season games with five home runs, 10 doubles, 32 RBI, 27 runs scored, and a slugging percentage of .602.

One of 13 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award as the top collegiate catcher in the country, Caldwell is on an All-SEC team for the first time in his career as well after being a Cape Cod League All-Star this past summer. Hitting .328 with seven home runs, 12 doubles, a triple, and 42 RBI, Caldwell's best exploits have come when he's behind the plate. This season he has thrown out 23 runners and is throwing guys out 51 percent of the time.

In SEC-only games the Winter Springs, Fla., native is hitting .367 with seven doubles, four home runs and 33 RBI, scoring 19 runs. Defensively he has thrown out 14 of 29 SEC base stealers, tops in the league.

This is the second straight year that Auburn has had multiple All-SEC selections after garnering six last year, four on the First Team and two on the Second Team.

Auburn, the No. 8 seed, opens up the 2011 SEC Tournament on Wednesday at 4:30pm when it faces top-seeded and top-ranked South Carolina. The game can be seen live on CSS or online at
