John Atkins is His Own Man

Thomson, Georgia defensive tackle John Atkins has a busy summer planned. Those plans include college visits and camps. We were able to spend a few minutes with John while he was attending a camp at Middle Georgia College.

John Atkins is happy with the way things are going with his recruitment. "I am at a camp with many other recruits and I am watching how teams that I like are doing with their recruiting."

One of those schools that he's watching is Georgia. Atkins was aware of the recent commits by defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James Deloach. "I saw that but it doesn't make a difference to me. I will make my decision on which school fits me the best and not on what commitments they have received. That will not change my outlook on a team. My commitment is based solely on who I like and how I feel I will fit into the team and what type of academics the school has."

Georgia Tech will be holding one of their camps this weekend but Atkins will not be attending. "I will not be able to attend that camp. I will be going to Auburn and Alabama this Thursday and Friday to visit their campus and school."

John has a list of five schools that he's giving the most attention right now. "The schools that I am looking at the hardest right now are Georgia Tech, Florida, Alabama, Clemson, and Auburn."

Atkins has one school that he feels is recruiting him the hardest. "Coach (Mike) Sewak from Georgia Tech is really recruiting me hard. I talk to him a lot and here from him a lot Also Coach Smart is recruiting me hard too but not as hard as Coach Sewak."

John is not ready to announce a list of favorites. "I feel that by the end of the summer I will have my final list of schools that I will be looking at to make my choice. "

The school's conference will not influence Atkins' decision. "The conference will not be a factor in my decision. I will go to the school that fits me the best and where I feel the most comfortable."

Look for Atkins to make his decision during his senior season or shortly after the season.
